Have you ever seen a betta fish vase? It’s basically a large flower vase filled with water and maybe a live plant. There are plenty of reasons why bettas should never be kept in one of these vases. Here are a few of those reasons.

Air

Bettas have a special organ atop their heads. Called a labyrinth organ, it allows fish to breathe oxygen from the air in addition to getting it from water. Being kept in a vase with a large plant may keep your betta from getting enough air. This may lead tot he death of your betta.

Space

These vases don’t have enough space for bettas to swim freely. Although there are relatively large designs, most don’t provide enough space for your fish. This will cause your betta to be unhappy and less healthy.

Water

Bettas need warmer temperatures since they’re tropical fish. You can’t regulate the temperature of the water in a vase. Also, the water will get dirty from waste produced by your fish and the plant if you have one in there. You will have to change the water frequently since you can’t have a filtration system.

Plant

Even if you do house your betta in a vase, you should avoid putting a live plant in there. A plant will only take up more room, which is already an issue with such a small amount to begin with. The plant also produces waste that will eventually cause health problems with your betta.

Many vases come with a peace lily. New owners sometimes think their fish eat plants. However, bettas eat meat. They need meat although they may nibble on the plant occasionally.
