In todays society a baby monitor is pretty much a must have tool if you are about to have a baby or if you have a very young child already. The baby monitor will alert you to when baby is needing fed, or changed and in general provides you with peace of mind while you get on with other chores etc around the home.

We need to consider a few things before buying a baby monitor:

- how much you want to invest (the more you spend the more features the monitor will have)

- the type of building you live in and where the child will be in relation to where you will be most of the time ” if you are far apart and the house has cement walls then strong transmission capabilities is a must have

- is video a desired requirement

What Types of Monitor are There?

- Audio: the most basic monitor will offer audio alone.

- Movement and audio capability: consists of three parts ” a transmitter, a receiver and a pad to place under the babies mattress to detect movement and/or breathing.

- Audio and video: this type ” in addition to some of the features already mentioned above – consists of a small camera that you can safely place near your baby and a small TV screen that you can take with you. Some of the higher end models even have infra red so you can see baby in the dark.

What to Consider

- The power source: battery operated monitor equipment is the best for mobility but can use a lot of batteries in a short space of time. So, the best options are either a/c adapter with battery combination or rechargeable battery option.

- Volume controls: this can be useful when you do not wish to hear every single sound that your little one makes.

- LED lighting on the receiver: if for some reason you are unable to hear the receiver (you could be doing the laundry, for example) then an LED lighting option on the receiver is a valuable addition.

- Multi-channel: allows you to find a receptive channel in your area with limited interference from other radio operated equipment such as mobile phones.

- The choice of frequency: if you are in need of a choice in channel frequency for the baby monitor due to lots of interference in your area, do not opt for the basic 49 MHz option. Either go for the 900 MHz monitor or even better, the 2.4 GHz monitor option.

- Low battery indicator ” vitally important if using a battery operated monitor.

- Size: if you move around a lot then a receiver that can be easily carried around with you is ideal. Also, if you travel often with your child its important to have a baby monitor that is light weight and easily packed.

- Two receiver option: good to have if you prefer to have one receiver left permanently in your bedroom for example, while the other one can be moved around the house as you need it.
