Tips for Putting Together A Great Family Tree Scrapbook

You’ve finally gotten around to getting started to tracing your genealogy and were complete your family tree. I am pretty sure you were able to gather loads of wonderful photos, documents, letters, memorabilia and the like. What do you do with all of these things now that your project is done? Why display them of course! And what other way to do this best, than by making a scrapbook?

A scrapbook is basically a book with blank pages for placing photos, clippings and documents. This ensures that whatever you have collected does not get lost with among all the piles of things scattered around your house. It is also the perfect way to present your collection in an organized and easy to view format. Here are some tips for putting this together the right way.

1. Get a durable book with detachable pages. A scrapbook must be sturdy enough to hold all the different pictures and papers you are going to attach to it. You will need a scrapbook that has detachable sheets, so that you can rearrange these sheets without having to tear them out. If for example you stumble an old letter from your grandfather to your grandma, and you have already finished your scrapbook project, you wouldn’t want to have to place the letter on the last sheet.

2. Arrange all the stuff you have collected in chronological order. Group everything starting from the ascendant you are tracing your lineage from and move forward. Segregate the items according to their side of the family too.

3. Label and layout. Before you even begin to paste anything in, make sure you know what papers and photos belong to whose profile exactly. Do not rush this process. Label them in the back with a pencil if you have to. Attach post-its that will provide complete info on the person’s full name, birthday, hometown and the like.

4. Document the oral evidence you have by transcribing it. Use a nice stationary to give it an elegant touch. This will make the scrapbook more interesting.

5. Once all the items are chronologically arranged and labeled properly, decide how you want to lay them out on your book. Do you want to do both sides of the family in one page, or do you want to do one whole side in one section of the book and the other side on the second section? This will determine the flow of your project.

6. Obviously, doing all the above will require a lot of attention to detail, patience and hard work. But do not scrimp on your love and devotion for this project. Make it worth your while and take time to get to know each of the personalities in the family. They all have a role in making you who you are today. It is a wonderful way to teach your children about who they are as well.
