The 5 Most Common Things People Forget When Travelling
August 4, 2009 in Travel Tips by article_directory
I’ve been working as a travel rep. in the Costa del Sol for many years and my experience has taught me that people are really very predictable. Every year (and I’ve been doing this work for over ten years) I meet people who make the same mistakes as those who have been before them. I’ve even met the same people each year who regularly forget the same things.
One of the most commonly overlooked holiday requirements is car hire. Many people expect the car hire firms will have the cars that they want when they arrive. Demand for hire cars during the peak weeks is very high and many people can find themselves dissatisfied when they can’t get the car that they want.
My suggestion is very simple and its likely to save you a good few pounds. Always book your car hire before you leave the UK. The further in advance that you can book your car hire the more you are likely to save. Also, you stand a far better chance of getting the exact vehicle that you want. Always book in advance to avoid disappointment as this way you are more likely to get the car that you want.
The next most commonly overlooked travel requirement is insurance. Often this hasn’t been overlooked but instead of getting a policy that provides adequate cover the holiday-maker may have scrimped on a travel insurance policy that doesn’t include essentials like repatriation in the event of injury.
Check the details to be sure that you and your family are properly covered by your travel insurance policy. Adequate medical cover is particularly important if you expect to engage in any potentially dangerous activities like parascending, go-karting or dangerous sports. Over the years that I have worked as a rep I’ve seen far too many people injured or sick on holiday but without the medical insurance they really need. The cost of repatriation without travel insurance can be incredibly expensive.
Another commonly overlooked item is a universal plug that fits Spanish power outlets. Most UK appliances, including hair dryers and telephone chargers, will run happily from the Spanish 220V AC supply. But Spain uses a differently shaped plugs so you need an adapter.
In the United States the supply is 120V AC so most UK appliances will not work. Make certain you have an adapter if you are travelling to Spain.
Everybody knows that sunscreen is an essential but many people travelling from the UK forget to put some on before they disembark from the aircraft. Every year people arrive here in Spain without having applied adequate suncscreen and within a couple of hours they can be badly sunburned.
And another immensely useful item that is commonly overlooked is a first aid kit. Include a few first aid essentials like some plasters, pain killers, bandages and some antiseptic cream. You may also like to pack some insect repellent and maybe some antihistamine cream for those annoyingly itchy bites and maybe anti-malaria tablets.
I really hope that my my suggestions will help to ensure that people have safer and more enjoyable holidays.
