Netbooks – 5 Things to Consider

August 5, 2009 in Computers by Greg Black

Just because netbooks are inexpensive doesn’t mean that you should go ahead and just buy any netbook that you see first. There is an art or skill to shopping for netbooks. Before you make a decision and buy any old netbook, there are a few things that you should consider first:

Consider your needs and wants – There are roughly two types of netbooks in the market today, netbooks with Solid State Drives (SSD) and netbooks with Hard Disk Drives (HDD). SSD netbooks boot faster, are able to withstand impact and are generally more reliable in terms of performance. But they are also notorious for having low storage capacities (the SSD netbooks that do have high storage capacity are very expensive). On the other hand, HDD netbooks can store up to 160GB of data on the hard drive, but they are less tough than their SSD counterparts. So what does have to do with you? It’s all about your needs and wants. Do you want a fast netbook with low storage or a netbook with high capacity but boots slower?

Consider the brands – One thing is for sure. There is not a shortage of brands to choose from when comparing netbooks. The netbook made its first appearance in 2007 and soon become a common product among many, if not all, of the major technology manufacturing companied. Different manufactures have different features. What’s most important is to compare these different brands of netbooks to determine which features you need or want.

Windows XP or Linux? – Like the desktop computers where there is competition between Mac and Windows, there is competition between Windows XP and Linux and its many different versions. The only difference is that different manufactures ship netbook models in both operating systems. For every netbook model, there is a Windows XP or a Linux version. While Linux netbooks are known for their stability and security (Linux users rarely, if ever, complain about malware infection and the like), Windows XP netbooks have the advantage of popularity. Many computer users are so used to using Windows XP, it’s very difficult to switch paradigms to use a Linux. The fact is, users of Linux netbooks are more likely to return their netbooks than Windows XP users.

Consider User Reviews – One way to put netbooks to the “test” without actually using it is to read reviews users write about specific netbooks. Manufactures are always going to portray their product as the “latest and greatest” product on the market. User reviews are an honest, first hand rundown on a particular netbook model. Another great way to get reviews of specific netbook brands or models is to search for forums on the different netbook models.

Always do comparison shopping – You should never settle and buy at the first price that you see on a shopping website. One good rule of thumb is to compare prices from at least three different sellers of netbooks before making a final decision. Keep in mind things like shipping, handling and warranty to calculate the total overall cost upfront and potentially in the long run. Some sites can resell products like netbooks for less due to purchasing them in a bulk amount and therefore getting a discount overall.

Understanding Netbooks and What They are Good For

August 1, 2009 in Computers by Greg Black

Netbooks are a comparatively recent development in the realm of mobile computing, but it is one that is gaining a lot of market share. Many consumers are looking for “ultra portable” devices that will give them access to their important applications and information no matter where they go. Unfortunately, not all consumers fully understand the difference between netbooks and notebooks, and this is causing some problems.

Even among the techie types, there is ongoing argument about the difference between laptop computers, and the general perception among consumers is that “a laptop is a laptop.” This is, however, not the case, and many people that purchased a netbook computer expecting the functionality of a regular laptop have experienced some buyer’s remorse when they discover the lack of functionality in a netbook.

One of the biggest advantages that netbooks have over regular laptop computers is the price. When a consumer sees a laptop that is priced at $300 and a real laptop that is priced at $900, of course the logical purchase is the cheaper one. The reason why netbooks are cheaper is because they come with less features and functionality. When a consumer realizes that they are actually getting what they paid for, they are most likely a bit disappointed.

Netbooks are not “useless.” On the contrary, they are very useful and offer many great features for a consumer on the go. The key is to understand what the netbook can do before buying one. Find out the main differences between a netbook and a laptop and if the differences are really all that significant.

Netbooks are portable computers that are designed for the specific purpose of having access to the internet and wireless communications. All of their computing power is encased in a smaller casing which limits the amount of components that can fit in its small ultra portable case. Most netbooks are limited to the size of hard drive and memory and don’t have an optical CD or DVD drive which limits some memory intensive high-end applications from running on netbooks. Its size is what makes them a favorite for those on the go and so attractive with their light and durable casing.

Netbooks were not created for individuals who do a lot of gaming, programming, and building databases. They are ideal for the average individual who wants to stay connected while away.

More companies today are trying to produce web based programs or at least web based versions of programs that can be accessed via the internet. This allows individuals with netbooks to stay super productive and be able to do things without a huge processor.

Netbooks may not be for everyone. It may not make sense for someone looking for an extremely powerful portable computer, but it could make sense for anyone looking to stay productive and connected from wherever they may be or go.
