Magazine Subscriptions Are They Scams?
December 3, 2009 in Entertainment by Matthew Kerridge
Have you ever bought magazine subscriptions from those kids that come door to door? I have but I never will again. First of all what companies actually get these kids to knock on people’s doors to push magazine subscriptions? And what kind of parents let their kids knock on doors in the afternoon and late at night? The kids give this pitch that they will get a trip to Disneyland or they will get a gift certificate if they sell so many magazine subscriptions.
I would think there would be an easier way to Disneyland than pushing magazines door to door. And who are these companies that send these kids out door to door anyway? And would you let your kids go door to door doing this?
I bought their pitch. I think they were getting free books to college if they beat out all the other kids doing the same thing. I handed them twenty seven dollars and ordered two magazines from their limited selection. The magazines were never delivered. I could not find the receipt the kid gave me. So I had no idea who to call to complain to.
That was the last time I would do that. Last month this guys calls me on my cell phone. He knows my name and that I have a debit card with the bank I have my checking account with. He gives me the line that I have been selected to receive a special deal with a coupon club where I will receive coupons to use at restaurants and online merchants.
So the guy tells me about my chance to get sixty dollars of free gasoline. All I have to do is pay for the shipping and handling of my coupon package. I have to agree to try a free month of their coupon discount club. I bite. I give the guy my debit card number. He then tries selling me magazine subscriptions for five dollars more. I balk. I ask him for his telephone number and his name and the company he is calling from. I had already forgot after all his sales pitches. The guy hangs up on me.
The guy has my debit card number I gave for the mailing of my coupon pack. I am checking my account for a week for strange charges. Two weeks later I receive my discount coupon pack in the mail. It has a book of coupons to places to eat I would not eat at for free. The free gas was twelve coupons of five dollars each.
I could not use more than one per month. I had to submit a receipt for each coupon and mail it in and then wait for my five dollar rebate check. I had to be a member of the coupon club to be able to get the rebate. It costs twenty nine ninety five a month to be a member of the club.
I went straight to their website and cancelled my membership using the information they gave me in the pack. There was also a new telephone number in the pack. I called them and cancelled by phone also. I wanted my loss to be no more than the five ninety five they took from me to send me their packet. I am glad I did not buy their magazine subscriptions.
