When you are attempting to make money online it is crucial that you are monitoring other websites within your niche and if possible contacting them and trying to cross promote. Now this does not mean keep track of every website within your niche only the “top dogs” which of course you can find on the front page of Google for your key terms. If you would like to ever break into and start sharing the wealth that they are getting from the organic traffic it is important that you know where to start and personally I find it best to begin with the quantity of backlinks they have and work from there. Backlinks are not everything, but they are what Google considers to be a vote from one website to another and usually the person with the most votes wins taking into consideration who is voting and how many times the website has voted.

So to get started you must find the ten top websites in your niche for your wanted key terms. Personally I recommend not worrying about major sites such as Wikipedia and about.com since these you more than likely do not have the resources to over throw. To beat these authoritative websites will take usually many years so if your keyword term is full of websites like these you will want to try for a keyword or term easier to dominate. Personally I have found blogs and other simple static websites much easier to beat since the marketing is usually hand done by the webmaster and blogger which means you are not fighting a million dollar marketing budget, but rather just putting in more time than the other webmasters in your niche. Once you have found the key term you would like to be ranked well for and the ten websites that are holding down the first page go to each and find the number of backlinks. I have found doing a yahoo search and placing the link: in front of their URL which brings up site explorer the easiest way to find how many backlinks my competitors have. This will give you the number of links pointing towards your website that you should be shooting for.

Another aspect of SEO that you will want to concentrate on when trying to match your competitors is the number of pages. If for example your competitor has two thousand pages and you have twenty then Google will see your competitor as being a larger website meaning that it has more information useful to its users. So again try to match the number of pages that your competitor has and make sure to feel the pages with useful information. It is also important to never sacrifice the readability of your website when trying to optimize it for search engines.

The third and final aspect of your competitors marketing campaign that you should be worried about is not only who, but the Page Rank of websites linking to your competitor. I hate to say it, but if you match the amount of backlinks to your competitor, but don’t worry about the Page Rank of the websites linking to you then you will not beat them in the Google SERPs. Again the yahoo search with link: in front of their domain will show the top thousand websites linking to your competitors website and give you an idea of how many high PR links you will need. Personally I go down the list and attempt to gain at least one backlinks from each of my competitors linking partners then when I have accomplished that which takes usually a week or two I write a few articles and submit them to my auto article submitter as well as a few high ranking article directories and the majority of the time end up on top of my competitor within the SERPs (search engine ranking pages).
