Palma is the largest city in Mallorca with a population of 375,000 residents. It is also the capital of the Balearic Islands and half of the nearly 800,000 Mallorcans live there. Catalan and Spanish are the native spoken languages of the citizens who also speak German and English. The majority of tourists hail from the British Isles of Ireland and England and also Germany.
The island of Mallorca is ancient and was governed by the Byzantines, Romans and Nationalists during the Spanish Civil War. Tourism is the main industry in Mallorca and economic mainstay. It grew from half a million visitors in the 1950s to over 22 million in 2008. Temperatures are in the high 80 degrees from June-September (or mid 20 degrees Celsius). Winter lows are around 50 degrees Fahrenheit or 10 degrees Celsius and it stays relatively mild.
