Well, here’s how: newborn babies need a lot of clothes but they grow out of them so quickly it makes more economic sense to buy less expensive baby clothes and to use the money you save on something that will benefit your little one for a lot longer ” for example, books. By introducing simple books to your child from a few weeks old you will be giving them a good start in the development of language and communication skills.

Anyone who has studied child development knows that talking to your newborn baby not only calms her but also helps her brain develop and aids her learning ability. In the early days babies sleep most of the time but when you are feeding, changing or bathing her talk to her. Not only is this a bonding time but you are also teaching her the rules of conversation.

Although you may not realize it, just by talking to your baby about the everyday things that are going on you are teaching him the art of conversation and communication. One of the best times for talking to your baby is while you are feeding him. Even if you are bottle feeding him, always hold him and talk to him.

You will notice that when your baby is feeding that there will be short breaks in the sucking. You may also notice that when your baby is sucking they are looking at you, especially if you are talking to them. These are the first steps in learning how to hold a conversation. The pauses in the sucking are baby’s turn to “talk” to you and as they get older the pauses will be filled with your baby cooing at you in response.

If you don’t feel comfortable talking to your baby then how about singing to him? The sound of your voice reassures him and lets him know that you are still there. But the most important thing is to communicate with your baby to help him develop the skills he will need as he gets older.

Reading to your baby teaches him a whole range of things like counting, numbers, colors and the name of the things around him. Because babies love rhyme, choosing books with simple rhyming text is a good idea – for example One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish. Other favorites are Goodnight Moon and The Very Hungry Caterpillar but any book with simple text and brightly colored pictures is ideal.

Another great way to interact with your baby is to sing nursery rhymes to her. If she is upset lullabies like Hush Little Baby and Twinkle Twinkle Little Star will help soothe her and calm her down. To help with motor skills and co-ordination action rhymes such as Incey Wincey Spider, Patty Cake and This Little Piggy are great fun.

Talking, reading, singing and interacting with your baby is not only fun for both of you it is setting the stage for future learning. The more language and vocabulary your child has at three years old the more they will have when they start school at five or six years old.

So think about it this way – baby clothes last a short time but an earlier and better start in fun learning through books will have benefits for a lifetime. Buy cheap baby clothes and help your child forever!
