Historical Facts About Foxtrot
Foxtrot is an elegant and sophisticated dance, characterized by smooth, gliding steps and fluid movements. It’s quite similar to Waltz, as they are both smooth and elegant dances. In this article we’ll take a look at some historical facts about foxtrot.
When did the foxtrot first appear? Foxtrot first appeared in the summer of 1914 in New York. An American actor by the name of Harry Fox is credited as the originator of the foxtrot. In his musical show he introduced a trotting step to the ragtime music. This soon became known as Fox’s trot and the foxtrot was born.
From that time foxtrot evolved quite a bit. In the early 1930’s, when the Latin dances began to hit the scene, it began to take on a more smoother and elegant form. In the 40s it became America’s most popular dance, even more popular than waltz and tango.
Originally, foxtrot was danced to ragtime music. Today, it’s typically danced to big band music to which swing is also danced. Foxtrot songs and artists include: Frank Sinatra – New York, New York, Harry Connick Jr. – It Had To Be You, Michael Buble – Come Fly with Me, Louis Armstrong – What A Wonderful World, etc.
Normally, foxtrot music is written 4/4 time which means four beats to each measure/bar. Over the four beats of music three steps are taken. The basic rhythm is slow, slow, quick, quick.
Eventually, two different types of Foxtrot developed – slow and quick. Another name for quick foxtrot is quickstep which, in the beginning, was named Quicktime Foxtrot. Quickstep is very lively and cheerful. Slow Foxtrot of Slowfox is further split into International and American style.
From its beginnings, Foxtrot has changed quite a bit. It’s a wonderful social dance and there are a lot of songs that you can dance to it. Elegant and romantic, it’s here to stay.
