Culinary Schools: Important Information

July 20, 2009 in Uncategorized by Marion Rose Jones

Becoming familiar with the types of culinary schools that are available is important. Hopefully, this article will help you to decide what type of culinary school you might be interested in. There are actually several things you should look for when selecting one of these schools.

Choose a school that has a high graduation rate. You need to know that you can at least graduate from the school of your choice. More importantly, you want to be able to get a good job after graduation.

As you research different schools, make sure that they are equipped with working kitchens, and that they can provide you with some actual restaurant experience. If you cannot get this, it will be harder to make the transition from school to the working environment. You should be prepared for this going in.

Look for schools that have a lot of kitchens, and possibly an internship at a local restaurant. This will be beneficial when testing your skills. As you are narrowing down your search, look for schools that have lots of professionals working there. If the school has a lot of master chefs or bakers, then you know you are going to a good, well-equipped school.

See if you can find a school where the celebrity cooks actually teach, instead of just endorsing the school. Another thing to look for is the student to faculty ratio. You might also want to see if there are opportunities for personal mentoring.

Take a glance at the programs the school offers. You want to select one that provides associates and bachelors degree programs. This ensures that your hard work will not be taken for granted out in the real world. It also guarantees that the school is serious about teaching their students properly.

Even if you choose to go for just an associates degree, it will at least cover the basics of cooking and preparing food as an art. Getting the bachelors will provide you with a solid foundation for cooking in restaurants, and advancing in the world of the culinary arts. You might also want to look for schools that are regionally accredited.

Last of all, search for a school that is within your price range. You do not want to place too much of a burden on yourself trying to pay for a school that you cannot afford easily. Look for programs with financial backing and apply for those. Make sure you can get a job while you are in school to help pay for it.
