Although Brisbane has a relaxed beach feel, it is actually located off the coast. If you are looking for the beauty and serene atmosphere of Moreton Bay, then you need to head to the suburbs, such as Redcliffe and Manly.
Redcliffe: From Queenslands first European settlement (1824), to a thriving seaside city, Redcliffe is only a 30 minute drive from Brisbane. Part of the attraction to Redcliffe is the relaxed lifestyle, golden beaches, and parks. This peninsula sticks out into Moreton Bay, and from the top of the volcanic cliffs you can take in the views of the islands from across the bay.
There are heritage trails that you can follow, where you will enjoy the sights of historic buildings. Redcliffe beaches are great for the swimmer in everyone, and if you are more of the fishing kind you can hop onto the Redcliffe Jetty. At Pelican Park, you can enjoy kite flying on the the second and forth Sunday of each month, hosted by the Queensland Kite Flyers Society. If you are interested in looking at wildlife, Redcliffe offers tours where you can watch humpback whales migrate past the coast during the winter.
Alma Park Zoo: The Alma Zoo is located in the rainforest gardens, and is 28 kilometers north of the city. Here you will have the opportunity to interact with both Australian and exotic animals, such as koalas, kangaroo and deer. Other animals available for viewing are wombats, camels, monkeys and more. There are also many spots for you to stop, relax and enjoy a nice afternoon picnic.
Wynnum-Manly: This is an attractive coastal area, located on 15 kilometers east of the city. If you are interested in wildlife, Pandanus Beach is the place for you to visit, just watch out fro fish and migrating birds. There is a boardwalk along the shore for you to enjoy a leisurely walk, or you can hire a bike and ride a 5 kilometer esplanade from Manly to Lota. If you want a glimpse of some beautiful yacht visit the Manly Boat Harbour, you can also hire boats for fishing and sailing while you are there, or book a tour to the island of St. Helena where the structures of prison life still remain from back in 1867-1932.
The suburbs that surround Wynnum-Manly have a history dating back to the 1860’s. There is a 19th century fort located at the mouth of the Brisbane River, Fort Lytoon, which acts as a museum on Sundays and public holidays. The museum is an interpretation of the military and social history of Queensland form 1879. There are also public tours, of Brisbane, offered at the Port of Brisbane and an information visitors center.
