Using Percentage-based Formulas In Wool Dyeing

I am a wool dyer. When I first decided to try this art, I was at a loss about how to start. Then I came across an old article in ‘Threads” magazine on the subject of wool dyeing using the three primaries and percentage-based formulas. This was in sharp contrast to the teaspoon-based formulas I had seen, and the use of many pre-formulated colors. I found all of that very confusing, so this simpler, organized method of dyeing colors intrigued me. So I made a spreadsheet of all the possible combination of magenta, cyan and yellow, in 5% incremental changes, using only two of the three colors for my formulas. For example, the very first words I ever wrote on my start down this path were “100% magenta”, and the next formula I wrote down was 95% magenta and 5% cyan. I followed this pattern down to 0% magenta and 100% cyan. Then I repeated the pattern with magenta and yellow, and yellow and cyan. This approach was easy to understand, and produced a lovely collection of very bright colors all around the color wheel. Many were duplicates, and so I culled through them, choosing colors that produced a nice, even progression all the way around the color wheel.

Then I started to plan working with all three primaries in each formula, which, naturally, increased the number of possible formulas radically. This, I knew, would force me to think three-dimensionally, instead of two-dimensionally, as I had with only two primaries. So I had to figure out an organized way to do this, and I ruminated on it for a long time, while driving down the road, doing dishes, and laying in bed at night. Finally, my “Eureka!” moment came one day while waiting for my son’s basketball game to start, and I wrote down my plan on a piece of paper borrowed from a student sitting next to me. I started with magenta again, using 90%, then added 2.5% cyan and 7.5% yellow. Then I used 5% cyan and 5% yellow, and finally 7.5% cyan and 2.5% yellow. Then I followed the same pattern, using only 80% magenta with all the possible combinations of cyan and yellow in 5% increments. And I suspected that, in general, there would not be a discernible difference in color with a 2.5% change in formula. I repeated this pattern down to using 50% magenta and all the combinations of the other two colors. Then I followed the same process using cyan, and then yellow, as the main primary. Using yellow as the main primary produced a universe of browns, when yellow was 70% or less of the formula. This left only those “three-primary” (or tertiary) colors containing no more than 45% of any primary, so I developed a spreadsheet to trial these 30 or so colors, which, as you might guess, are mostly grey.

So, a few sample pieces at a time, I systematically dyed all of these colors to a medium value. In this manner, I had sampled the entire range of colors that could possibly be made using the three primaries, and this gave me a wonderful collection of color from every part of the color wheel. I was pleased to see that a 5% incremental change often produced a progression of colors that were discernibly different from each other, without being too different. Once I had this large collection, I did experiment with formulas in between all of the shades I had produced and found about 20 more that were brand new. But for the most part, the colors in between were only slightly different from what I already had, so I have contented myself with the collection of about 150 “master colors” as it stands, adding only the occasional new color. I have spent, since then, literally thousands of hours using this method and I have to say it is the bomb! The only caveat would be that greys and browns are more difficult to produce using the primaries, and so this year I will be trying a new method using pre-formulated blacks and browns, and adding the primaries to them to make variations on those colors.
