Micros Steps To Online Success
March 19, 2010 in Hardware by James Pynn
While I have suggested a number of best practices with regards to transitioning to the online marketing model, I have not pointed out the importance of bandwidth. To be sure, bandwidth is a tremendous factor when it comes to accommodating online traffic. Too much bandwidth — if there is such a thing — is primarily a budgetary matter. Paying for massive amounts of bandwidth, before you have the traffic that justifies this expense, can be problematic.
Too little bandwidth, on the other hand, can be detrimental to your web presence. If potential visitors are unable to access your site — or worse, if they receive 401 or 404 Error Messages, they may be inclined to think your site is down (at worst) or completely mismanaged and unprofessional (at best). Either outcome is unfavorable, to say the least.
Many bandwidth issues are associated with budgetary constraints or service provider capabilities. If you lack the funds to pay for more bandwidth, so be it. If you happen to be using an Internet service provider that lacks the bandwidth you need, you will have to change providers. The alternative, in terms of your business venture, will be unacceptable. Always verify the bandwidth capabilities of any potential Internet service provider.
The third, and most overlooked component is your hardware bandwidth. If you do not have the necessary hardware to process and make the best of your bandwidth, there is little need to bother. Optimally, you should have a mainframe in place that can allocate the traffic accordingly. These mainframes must have MicroTCA platforms in place to handle your bandwidth.
Online success often translates to offline success. But however you define success, there is only one way to gauge capacity — and that is bandwidth. If you have a compelling product or service, a legitimate brick-and-mortar address, and a well-designed online presence, you are three-quarters of the way to ultimate success. Be sure you have the capacity — and hardware — to satisfy the remaining fourth.
If you’re looking to enjoy a successful online run, you will need have reliable MicroTCA boards installed in your mainframes.
