Can A Doctor Really Guarantee Weight Loss?

Low carb diet plans are all the rage these days, and for good reason. For lots of folks they work wonders, as long as those people stick to it. But to tell the truth, the same is true for almost any healthy diet plan. So long as the plan includes proper nutrition, smaller portions, plenty of exercise, and tons of persistence, weight loss is virtually inevitable.

Yet one of the sad truths about weight loss is that most diets fail — not necessarily because the diet itself won’t work, but because it’s just so tough to stick to it. Well recently I ran across an ad that intrigued me. A doctor has put together his own 8-week weight loss plan, and he guarantees success. Is this possible? Is it even ethical?

I want to give you a review of his plan and let you be the judge.

The man behind this weight loss plan is Dr. Jonny Bowden. He’s a nutritionist, personal trainer, and psychologist, and his plan is called the Diet Boot Camp. I’ve got to admit that his claims sounded to me like a bunch of sales hype: look fitter, feel happier, and be more productive in 8 weeks … guaranteed. But after following him for some time now, reading his articles and watching his videos, I’m beginning to think that just maybe he’s onto something.

The hook here is his expertise in psychology. As a nutritionist and personal trainer he certainly is an expert when it comes to diet and exercise. But what makes his plan special is his background in psychology. He knows how to motivate people and keep them focused.

For example, the first part of his 8-week system is a journal full of probing questions. Some folks might be put off by this approach. They may want to just jump into the diet and exercise right away. But Dr. Bowden is a strong believer in the mind-body connection. He insists on taking the time to prepare the dieter for the weight loss journey ahead.

Dr. Bowden says that dieting is like a three-legged stool, and the diet is only one leg. The other two legs are your thoughts and emotions. So he focuses a great deal on how you think and feel throughout the whole program.

As far as diet and exercise go, the Diet Boot Camp system is basically a low carb, high protein diet plan, with plenty of exercise too. But the layout of the plan looks pretty flexible. The way it is set up, you start at your own fitness level and eating habits, and work up from there. He works with you gradually to improve both your diet and your fitness level.

A few areas of this plan concern me. For one thing, Dr. Bowden makes no claims about how much weight you will lose. He talks about getting fitter, feeling happier, and being more productive. While that sounds more realistic than “20 pounds in 10 days!”, it does make me wonder how long it takes to lose weight on this plan. On the other hand, though, even if I didn’t lose a ton of weight quickly, I’d be pretty happy with looking fitter, feeling happier, and being more productive.

My other concern is how much you have to eat on this plan. Dr. Bowden says you need to be eating every 3 hours for this plan to work. I know that eating lots of little meals throughout the day helps with weight loss, but how can you fit that into a busy day? I would hope he has recommendations for working this into a busy schedule.

The final positive point in this review is that the program includes an online support community. Weight loss buddies can make a big difference in diet success or failure. I’m glad to see that Dr. Bowden included support and accountability as part of his program.

So all in all, you might want to check out the Diet Boot Camp if you’re looking for a new weight loss program. It seems pretty promising, and Dr. Bowden comes across as very genuine. Plus, if you check out his videos and photos, you’ll notice that he certainly looks like living proof that his program really works. Maybe he actually can guarantee weight loss.
