Minerals such as magnesium relax the muscles and relieve inflammation. The salts pull out toxins and relieve pain and stiffness. All of this serves to relax and calm both body and mind.
Dendritic Salt Dendritic salt is a commonly used extender in commercial bath salts. This salt prevents caking and extends shelf life by holding scents longer. It is also fashionable because it dissolves easily. These are nice qualities, but they are synthetic and as such, they come at a price. It is just chemically modified table salt and not a safe choice for use with essential oils.
Dead Sea Salt This is the queen of all therapeutic salts. Imported from the Dead Sea in Israel. It has a unique mineral profile and unsurpassed density. It is so much more concentrated than sea salt. The dead Sea is 33.7% salt – that is 8.6 times more salty than the ocean. It is so salty that it cannot support life. Don’t drink it – it is deadly salty. Also whereas most salts are mostly sodium chloride – the ocean is 96% – the Dead sea salt is high in health giving electrolytes: calcium, magnesium and potassium. The mineral can rejuvenates tissues, detoxify and relax muscles. They relieve pain. Use dead sea salts in a bath or scrub, to soak away the pain literally. There is a reason the dead Sea was and is a famous natural healing spa. The high mineral content imparts significant healing properties to this salt making it the premier aromatherapy salt.
Epsom Salt Epsom salt is magnesium salt. It comes form regular salt water with the table salt removed magnesium is a natural laxative and muscle relaxer. It also removes toxins from the muscles. It will sooth an aching back or tires limbs. It is widely available and inexpensive. Add some essential oils to relax the mind and relieve stress and you have a great bath.
Pickling Salt Pickling salt is pure table salt with no additives. It is also finer, so that it dissolves much better. You can get it at the grocery store.
European Spa Salt European spa salt is simply Mediterranean sea salt. It is similar to table salt, but is an organic sea salt with higher concentrations of beneficial electrolytes.
Solar Salt This attractive chucky grain salt is popular in aromatherapy salt jars. This is the same salt you buy for aquariums, so you certainly can soak in it. It takes a while to dissolve in warm water. Make sure whatever you buy is pure because coming from salt water lakes, it can contain pesticides. You never want something like that in any aromatherapy blend. The mineral content is like sea salt – natural and good, but for therapeutic baths we really prefer something stronger.
Hawaiian Red Salt Hawaiian Red Salt, or Alaea sea salt, is a natural, unprocessed salt sea salt. It is red because of volcanic red clay in the area. The volcanic red clay contains iron oxide. It is used for sore throats, cuts, scrapes, aches, muscle sprains, tissue infections and for cold sores. The clay draws out toxins and infections.
Icelandic Brine Salt From a mile deep under the earth in scalding hot subterranean pools, we get Icelandic Brine Salt. The temperature rises to over 300 degrees and yields a salt extremely rich in minerals yet with less than half of the normal amount of sodium chloride. This makes is less drying. The unique inclusion of silica creates a natural compound that nourishes and soothes the skin like no other. Silica leaves the skin renewed and silky and the hair and nail replenished.
