4 Steps to a Successful Horse Training Program

Regardless of the horse schooling method you choose, your success will depend on having a clear vision of what you are trying to achieve, or an understanding of what obstacles you may need to overcome.

It is worth taking the time to go through an initial assessment and planning stage before you start out on your training program. Getting clarity and focus on your outcomes will avoid annoyance and frustration for you and your horse further down the line.

If you follow these 4 steps you will have a greater chance of success;

Step 1: Write down what you want to achieve with your horse, and make the goals CLEAR and SPECIFIC…

- “I would like to ride out on my own or in company, safely and without drama”

- “We want to go to local horse shows and complete a novice dressage test…”

- “My goal is for my horse to be well-behaved when being groomed…”

Step 2: Your Horse – Assess your horse and what you expect them to achieve from a programme of training and be realistic in in your expectations…

Temperament: Does your horse have the correct temperament for the schooling program you have planned? Are they quiet or fiery, stubborn or stroppy, or just unpredictable!

Education: Does your horse have enough knowledge already to understand what you will be asking of them?

Fitness: Has your horse got enough fitness and stamina to be able to do what you want?

Step 3: Assess yourself and recognise your strengths and weaknesses so that you can deal with your own expectations…

Temperament: Are you calm or highly strung, anxious or self assured, laid-back or impatient?

Knowledge: Do you have the knowledge and experience to teach and train your horse to the level you wish to reach?

Fitness: Do you have the fitness and stamina to be able to train your horse or compete to the level you have set yourself ?

Step 4: Planning your schooling – taking the time to plan your training program in up-front will give you a better chance of succeeding…

Plan your training in stages that are achievable, measurable – and most of all, enjoyable!

How quickly you and your horse progress through your schooling program will depend on the amount of your knowledge, the amount of time available to you and the capacity of your horse to learn new things.

Don’t be too hard on your self – no one is expecting you or your horse to go from Nursery School on Monday to High School on Friday!

A goal without a plan is just a wish. ~Antoine de Saint-Exupery
